Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their way of life, imitate their faith.
Hebrews 13:7
Not all who claim to lead in God's name truly follow Him. Before imitating anyone’s faith, carefully evaluate their life, their teachings, and the fruit they bear. Do they align with Scripture? Do their actions reflect Christ?
Some may argue that the focus should be on Jesus rather than on human leaders. While this is true, Scripture also calls for careful consideration of those who teach and guide. Focusing on Jesus does not mean ignoring the impact of spiritual leaders. It means looking at the outcome of their lives and measuring their words and actions against His standard.
Faithful leaders demonstrate obedience to God through their trust in Him, commitment to truth, and love for others. But not all leaders remain on the right path. Those who turn away from God’s truth and love do not do so in isolation. Their influence shapes those who follow them, and when their teachings or actions no longer align with God’s Word, they cause others to stumble. This isn’t always the result of obvious deception. Sometimes it comes through small compromises, self-serving motives, or a slow shift away from biblical truth.
One of the clearest signs of true or false leadership is how they treat others. Do they lead with humility, love, and justice? Or do they manipulate, oppress, and serve their own interests?
Be discerning. Follow those whose faith is proven through their obedience to God's Word, their integrity, and their Christlike love for others.
