Syntax Shift

It’s ironic: AI systems trained on human writing are now shaping how humans write. The em dash—once a normal stylistic choice—is now a red flag for AI detection. In response, people swap out em dashes for semicolons or commas; sentences are shortened, and typos are sometimes added. Anything to seem “more human.” The tool learned from the master, but now the master is being forced to change to avoid being mistaken for the tool. By changing how they write to avoid being mistaken for AI, people risk losing the very nuances that make their voice uniquely human and authentic. As for me, I won’t submit to the constraints of AI detection or censor my style to fit its narrow rules. Let the tool adjust to the master as it should.
